out hurt the hurter

lord I know we’ve all seen our fair share of it and we carry that over to our daughters, our sons, the grass underneath our feet in the shade. we carry it because we have seen such cruelty in our lives and if we inject that toxin into our children we can build up a tolerance (out-hurt the hurter) if we pluck up the flowers we can call it the cycle of life: that’s just how it is. We will never out-hurt the world because it will come up with new ways to beat us down and in the midst of it we forget that when we were small and saw this violence for the first time we didn’t wish for someone to have given us thicker skin (for Christ’s sake we were children) and only wished for kindness for a reminder that it is worth it to be alive. so we must be kind because it is much easier to be cruel how I will never pretend and lie to you that being kind is easy no not in this world. being kind isn’t free it is an active effort and it requires critical thinking and mindfulness but still we have to be kind because haven’t we all seen enough of cruelty? you don’t need a reminder I see it I see the scars on your skin so please put down that blade because you are kind you were a child remember the way you played and smiled with wonder at the rain and sun
